 Q: Dear Dr. Dave,

I work in a fast paced, highly stressful environment. By the end of the day, my nerves are frazzled and my lower back is tighter than a drum. I work out 3 to 4 times each week. It helps to relieve some stress, but only to a degree.

Can you suggest any methods to help alleviate these problems?

A: Dear Todd:

Stress and back pain are two of our modern societies most common ailments. So, you are not alone. Just knowing this should bring your stress level down at least a few notches. As for back pain, because of my background and training, I am partial to chiropractic manipulation. Chiropractic should be the treatment of choice for most back-related conditions and has a very high success rate.

Look for chiropractic practitioners who use modern low force techniques such as activator, flexion-distraction, S.O.T. to name a few. A recent U.S. government agency study has concluded that manipulation and exercise are the most effective treatments for low back pain. Stress and stress-related ailments are a major concern for our modern times. For this I offer some old advice and some new advice. Exercise is of utmost importance for not only dealing with stress but combating fatigue and depression. Getting good sleep is essential. Periodic weekend get aways (leave your work at home) to restore your beat up, stressed-out body. Be sure to avoid coffee and sugar because they burn out the adrenal glands. The best nutritional product I've found for stress-related problems is called "PRIME 1". This is a liquid herbal product that has "Adaptogens" which are special nutrients that help the body adapt to stress. People who take this (including myself) report that their stress/tension levels have reduced dramatically. Also, increased energy levels and mental focus are common. Sort of like taking natural prozac.
